City St George's Learning Circle. Enhancing digital reading – a pilot workshop. Online
In higher education, students often engage with digital reading materials, which can pose challenges for those facing barriers to reading such as the visual display of text or in decoding, processing, and retaining information. Reading experience can vary significantly depending on the resource used.
Many publishers and digital content aggregators invest in e-reader platforms and tools, offering features like display adjustments, text-to-speech, and accessible formats such as EPUB. Additionally, downloadable content can be used with accessible e-readers productivity tools and assistive technologies. We wondered how many of our students were aware of these options to customise reading formats to their needs.
Library Services piloted a workshop designed to help students identify their reading barriers and explore solutions. The aim was for participants to discover existing features in platforms, experiment with digital reading tools, and find formats that work best for them and their devices. In this Learning Circle, Wykes, Jessica and Crentsil, Felicity will share their preparation process, challenges encountered, and plans following the pilot.
