From luck to judgement – making accessibility meaningful to everyone Online
The phrase "It's not what you do, it's the way that you do it" is never more true than in the field of digital accessibility. Digital tools and resources can be great enablers, but used carelessly they disable and exclude. This session looks at digital accessibility from an institutional perspective, identifying the influences on the learner experience and highlighting the policies, practices and interrelationships that kickstart a sustainable culture of digital inclusion. With links to free resources and guidance, the session will provide both a framework for good policy and some tools for good practice.
Alistair McNaught spent 20 years as a mainstream teacher committed to developing student skills and independent learning. This led to early adoption of e-learning which in turn paved the way for an abiding interest in making teaching and learning content more accessible to more students. Alistair had a national role promoting elearning for Becta from 2000 – 2004, followed by 14 years for Jisc TechDis and Jisc working widely across the further and higher education sectors. He now works as an independent consultant. He is a regular conference speaker, trainer, author and mentor who specialises in making accessibility accessible to non-specialists.
